China, with its growing population, consumes a vast amount of energy. Traditional coal is still used today and pollutes the air, which is why China needs to find alternative, renewable sources of energy. Wind power is a good option.

What is wind power?

Wind power is a renewable, natural, and clean energy source that can be converted for use by wind turbines. Wind power is technically a form of solar energy since winds are caused by the sun's radiation The wind's kinetic energy , or energy caused by motion, can be caught and converted for use with proper technology.

To 'capture' the wind's energy, a wind turbine is needed. The larger the turbine, the more energy is caught. A wind turbine's tower is made of steel while the blades, called rotors, are made of fiberglass and polyester. When the wind blows and spins the rotors, they spin a shaft which sends the kinetic energy through a generator. The generator converts the kinetic energy to the energy people need to use.

Typical Wind Turbine

A typical wind turbine has three main parts: the tower, rotors, and a nacelle, the box behind the blades. Most of the action is done in the nacelle. When the wind turns the rotor, a shaft inside the generator spins and makes the spinning faster. Because the electricity can only be formed at a specific frequency, there are alternate ways a turbine works. One of these solutions are to make the rotors bend to control the speed of the wind. Another is to make the whole turbine match the wind speed. There are also many more options as to how to control the wind speed and still create electricity.
