So, what should we do???
Year by year, month by month, there are many old buildings which have been renovated. On one side, it’s not a wrong thing because the renovation was done in order to defend the condition of the buildings so that they can still stand firmly. For example, the floor-tile of mildewed floor should be renewed or the wood of a brittle door ought to be changed into the new one. Even, without any renovation, many old buildings perhaps cannot stand firmly anymore.     Unfortunately, most of the renovation made the old buildings changed until their originality proofed. People renovate the buildings by changing the parts of the buildings or adding anything to the buildings without pay attention to their historical value. Also, people in this era prefer modern buildings because the appearance is more attractive or the care that is more practical. So, renovations which were done usually
change the appearance of old buildings in Yogyakarta totally. In Malioboro, 60% or old buildings there have been changed into modern buildings. This is a sad fact. If we don’t take care those historical remains and ignore them, who will take care of them? There are several ways to take care of the buildings so that they can exist with their originality. They are:
    1. Be responsible in renovating old buildings
If we want to renovate an old building, the renovation that we do should not decrease their originality. For example, when the headmaster of 3 State High School of Yogyakarta wanted to change the floor in his school, he had to change that floor with precise floor tiles so that the condition of the building is still good, it still can stand firmly, and its originality is not destroyed.
    2. The government and citizens must pay more attention to historical remains like old buildings
    The government and
citizens are important subjects in protecting the originality of old buildings in Yogyakarta. The government for example, must make an explicit rule about protection of old buildings. The realization of the rule must be appropriate to the law and there must be no bargaining. Every renovation and addition of rooms of old buildings must be done with permission and be controlled by the government. Citizens also must keep the cleanliness of the buildings so that the buildings can be still firm. Old buildings must be protected from molds, fungus, and white ants which can make the buildings be brittle.

We have to realize that we must take care of all old buildings in our country. Remember that old buildings are one of civilization that built our life now. So, it’s not true if we remodel old buildings as adaption of modernization, but modernization has to be done carefully so that it won't crush their historical value, beauty, and uniqueness.
