| In
this era, the number of old buildings in Indonesia has decreased. Most
of them have been changed into modern buildings. Others are damaged and
crushed as the effect of development. There are also old buildings which
are damaged because the cleanliness isn’t cared. Many lichens grow
in their walls that can break the buildings. Also, a lot of wooden buildings
are attacked by white ants. Even though there is an old building that
is still original, its surrounding is changed so that the existence of
the building becomes threatened. For example, Kimia Farma Drugstore in
Malioboro. The function and the shape aren’t changed and still original.
But, many banners and billboards were built around the building
so that its beauty and uniqueness are covered. |

to the citizens of Yogyakarta. For people in middle and lower circle of
society, earning money for daily food or education is more important than
taking care of old buildings around them. For people in upper circle of
society, making new work in modern buildings results more profit than
making new work with defending old buildings. So, they tore down some
old buildings and rebuilt it in the form of modern buildings The government has made several laws about old buildings. They are Law No.5 Year 1992 about Culture Pledge which contains the rule about maintenance, ownership, and management of historical things, and also punishment for those who violate this law, Government Regulation No.10 Year 1992 about realization of Law No.5 Year 1992 about Culture Pledge, and Decision of Culture and Education Department No. 062/U/1995, No.063/U/1995, and No.064/U/1995. are clear enough. Unfortunately, the realizations are not firm. The government
only made the rules, but, in fact he only pays less attention to old and
historical buildings. So, many old buildings are damaged because of globalization.
