Kraton
Yogyakarta is the former of Islamic Mataram Kingdom in Yogyakarta. This
region located in the center of Yogyakarta is an important place in the
history and the tourism of Yogyakarta. Besides it had ever been the palace
of Islamic Mataram Kingdom in Yogyakarta, Kraton also becomes tourists’
favorite destination. There are three important buildings here, namely
The Palace of Kraton Yogyakarta, Great Mosque of Kauman ( Masjid Agung
Kauman ), and Taman Sari.
The palace of Kraton Yogyakarta has Javanese pattern with Islamic ornament on its buildings. The shape of the roof is pyramid. The building is square with a lot of big pillars inside. According to the characteristics, this building is called Joglo. There is a touch of Dutch style in this building. We can see it from the wide-ventilation windows. It becomes the uniqueness of this palace. At past, this building was used as the king’s and his family’s settlement. Now, besides settlement, Kraton is used as a cultural museum. |

The
Great Mosque of Kauman ( Masjid Agung Kauman ) is an ancient mosque built
by an architect K. Wiryokusumo. The mosque has a Javanese style namely
Joglo. The roof has three stairs with a dome in its peak. In the three
sides of the mosque there are a front porch and a pond. The most interesting
side of this mosque is a unique gate that similar with a sultan palace
building. This mosque actually has a rectangle pattern. Totally, it is
a square. Taman Sari is a beautiful building inheritanced by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. It was built in1758. Taman Sari is located about 2 km in the south of the Palace of Kraton Yogyakarta. Taman Sari, or Fragrant Garden, means a beautiful garden. In the past, this garden |
became
a rest place for the king and his family. Now, its function already changed
into a recreation place. The main building of this garden has a Portuguese
style with Javanese carved in its wall. In this garden there are also three
big ponds used by the king and his wife and mistresses. In the other side,
there is an under ground tunnel that used for an emergency rood while the
palace attacked by the enemy. Up to now, the building of Kraton never been changed, a little damage due to an earth quake on 27th of May, 2006 was renovated and a small interior alteration was performed lead to more beautiful for a very interesting place to be visited. |
