Many people buy vintage fashion because of the sense of individuality that comes from the fact that no one will be wearing something identical or similar to what they have because garments were often hand sewn instead of mass produced like today. Typically, clothing made from 1920 to 1970 is considered vintage. Anything older is thought of as antique and clothing made after 1970 is retro. Vintage clothing can be found in thrift shops, yard sales, online sites, or flea markets. Before buying a vintage garment, especially from an online source, you should ask about the returning policy. Some sizes vary greatly from what they are today. A size 6 today could easily be what a size 12 was in 1930. When possible, try on garments before your purchase them.
Women: Many women like wearing vintage because of the feminine cuts that were popular at the time they were made. Wearing vintage head-to-toe though can be overpowering. Instead, try mixing new and old garments, like a vintage cardigan with jeans.
Men: The majority of men’s vintage fashion includes old jackets. These jackets are made out of “manly”, durable materials like leather, wool, or fur, so finding a jacket in good condition should be relatively easy. Back then, it was popular for men to wear long, wool trench-style overcoats or shorter, leather bomber jackets. Now however, both men and women can wear these styles, as well as military style coats, which come in colors ranging from khaki to black.
