Decoding Dog Talk
How good are you at understanding what your dog is saying to you? Throughout this page there are
photographs of dogs communicating with us. There is also information on how you can decode their talk.
Can you try to interpret what their tail, ears, eyes, hair, and body are saying? Have fun!
  ~ Tail ~
  • Wagging gently: "Hello, I am so happy to see you! How are you?"
  • Wagging vigorously: "Do you want to play?"
  • Tucked under: "I'm not aggressive; please don't hurt me."
  • Wagging fast in a circle: "I am so excited!"

  ~ Ears ~
  • Pricked forward:
"I am on alert; what is going on there?"
  • Relaxed: "All is well."
  • Pinned back: "I am afraid."

  ~ Eyes ~
  • Staring into your face: "I am dominant."
  • Looking away: "I am not a threat to you; I am totally submissive."

  ~ Hair ~
  • Hair raised on back: "I am nervous," I feel threatened," or "I am getting agitated."

  ~ Body ~
  • Rump up, front down, tail wagging, possibly a bark: "Wanna play?"
  • Lying on back, showing stomach: "I am fully submissive; don't hurt me."
