Animal Architects

Did you know that man has learnt to build some amazing structures simply by learning from animals? Even the simplest of animals can engineer some of the most robust structures in the world! Please take a look at the photos below to see the original animal engineered structure and how man duplicated a building from their creations.

Termite Mounds Eastgate Center Building in Harare, Zimbabwe

Termites build their mounds to maintain a steady temperature; they do this by natural adaptation by using
a thick thermal mass as an insulator along with several air channels to survive their harsh environment.
When it was time to build an office complex in Harare, Zimbabwe, engineers copied the patterns from
the natural adaptation of the termites to use similar cooling and heating mechanisms,
without having to use air conditioning, to deal with the hot African sun.

Beehive
Beehive Parliament Building
The parliament building was built to look like a beehive.

Beaver Dam
Man-made Dam

Beavers are instinctive dam builders and they effortlessly interweave sticks to create strong dams,
and use mud to seal and make it impermeable to water. Humans have copied beaver engineering to build dams,
by trial and error, to prevent flooding, for creating storage sources of drinking and irrigation water,
to generate power, and many more.

Ant Bridge
Man-made Bridge

See the remarkable resemblance between the ants' instinctive bridge construction and the man made bridge!

Bird's Nest
Man-made Hut

Another man made structure inspired by an animal!
