Animals as Clothing

This debate started with the question:
How do you feel about raising and
killing animals for their fur?

36 children, aged 11-13, from
two classrooms, in USA,
participated in this debate!

I think that if animals are treated in a humane way before they die, its ok. That's what they do with free range chickens.
~ Eva, Age 12 ~

Totally.
~ Hannah, Age 13 ~

What about meat, eggs, food?
~ Jen, Age 12 ~

You don't kill a chicken by taking eggs.
~ Chris, Age 12 ~

Yes, you are. You don't allow the egg to hatch.
~ Ayla, Age 13 ~

But the chicken that laid the egg was not harmed.
~ Chris, Age 12 ~

But the chickens are in poor living conditions.
~ Paige, Age 12 ~

I think that animals that are used for meat are treated horrible.
~ Hannah, Age 13 ~

Not always.
~ Hannah, Age 12 ~

Although getting milk from cow isn't harming them, its still taking away the milk they made for their babies.
~ Wendy, Age 13 ~

If people wore cotton clothing or maybe silk, then it would be fine! Cotton comes from cotton plants and silk is a silkworm secretion, right? If we just wore those, we'd be very well off! We don't need anything else!
~ Ayla, Age 13 ~

Yeah, but we force the silkworms to make silk. That is not cool either.
~ Hannah, Age 12 ~

Killing animals for their fur is cruel. If a ferret is born, they deserve to have more to look forward to in life than to be killed when their fur is nice enough.
~ Wendy, Age 13 ~

I think it is wrong to breed animals for clothing because it is just like killing animals for their skin, etc.
~ Emily, Age 12 ~

Well, we don't kill sheep for wool. But then again we do have to kill a cow for leather.
~ Hannah, Age 13 ~

We won't have clothes then...
~ Ben, Age 11 ~

Hello! We weave stuff from cotton!
~ Wendy, Age 13 ~

You could make clothes out of less harmful materials. You don't have to kill animals to make clothes.
~ Chris, Age 12 ~

I think that it is wrong because there are plenty of alternatives to making clothing.
~ Dan, Age 11 ~

I agree.
~ Collin, Age 11 ~

You think we kill sheep for wool?
~ Ben, Age 11 ~

The question was killing animals. Sheep get shaved.
~ Elizabeth, Age 11 ~

Umm...Ben, we shear sheep.
~ Amanda, Age 13 ~

Just use faux fur!
~ Bridget, Age 11 ~

Exactly!
~ Paige, Age 12 ~

It really sickens me when people kill animals like that when they can use cotton or wool instead.
~ Casey, Age 11 ~

Some people should start thinking that animals are like humans. Would you kill a human being?
~ Hannah, Age 13 ~

I know what you mean...
~ Collin, Age 11 ~

But the world is starting to use artificial fur, but some are not. I really want them all to.
~ Casey, Age 11 ~

We have cotton and wool!
~ Meaghan, Age 11 ~

Plus a whole bunch of synthetics and stuff, like fabric made out of recyclables.
~ Hannah. C, Age 12 ~
