Background

Since the beginning of time humans have lived with animals. In ancient times, people used animals the way they wanted to and there was no discussion of whether that was right or wrong. Animals were used for sports, entertainment, food, labor, clothing, transportation, and protection. As people became more sophisticated they began questioning the appropriateness of how humans were treating animals. In late 1800, people started using animals for testing chemicals and drugs to determine if they are safe for human. Some people thought this was cruel and unnecessary; they believed that animals are their own beings and they should be left alone to live their lives the way they were meant to. Others believed that animals were people's property and that owners had the right to do whatever they wanted to with their property. These disagreements began the controversy over animal rights.

Animal Welfarists

Individuals who advocate for animals and believe that animals can be used by humans but should be treated humanely are called animal welfarists. For example, if an animal is used in entertainment the animal welfarists feel that as long as the animal is treated and cared for well, it is fine. If an animal is going to be used for food, they believe that the animal should be raised humanely and killed without any kind of cruelty.

Animal Rightists

Individuals who firmly believe that animals are not meant to be used for any type of human use are called animal rightists.

Why animal rights?

" The question is not, Can they reason?
nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?
"
- Jeremy Bentham about why animals have rights.
