Roadside Zoos: Prison on Wheels
Chew on this...
Here are a few things
we noticed happening at travel zoos:
  • Animals sitting in tiny, dirty cages with food and their own excrements scattered around.
  • Chimpanzees housed alone and going crazy from lacking company and being trapped in tiny miserable cages.
  • Kangaroo housed in barren cages with not enough room to jump and with no stimulation.
  • Lions pace in their cage bored and aimlessly.
  • Animals crammed in cages with barely enough room to turn around.
  • Animals housed in cages with insufficient heat in the winter.
  • Animals drinking from water bowls filled with dirty water; bowls in some cages were empty.
  • Animals not being able to exercise natural behaviors.

What can you do to help these animals?

  • Do not attend roadside zoos, game parks, travel safaris, or petting zoos.
  • If you hear about a travel zoo coming to your area, write to authorities in your area stating why they are cruel to animals.
  • Get the support of the community to peacefully protest such exhibits.
  • If you see any animal in distress, pain, or suffering report it promptly.
  • Distribute brochures about the problem
