What is Visual Perception ?

Visual perception is the ability of the brain to interpret/understand/make sense of what the eye sees. It is important to note that visual perceptual problems do not necessarily arise as a result of poor eyesight.

How do you recognize Visual Perception Problems

  • Reversals of letters/number/words , eg. b-d , saw-was , etc
  • Confusion with working left or right.
  • Incorrect copying from a page or the board.
  • Incomplete written work.
  • Losing/difficulty finding the place.
  • Shifting page or body writing or drawing.
  • Math’s problems arise – difficulty distinguishing between mathematical symbols e.g.

    • + instead of *
    • Incorrect sequencing of numbers 503 / 305
    • Not understanding more and less

What remedial activities can be used ?

Other examples

  • Rhythmical games involving sequences of actions
  • Action songs
  • Obstacle course
  • Treasure hunt
  • Weaving
  • Art projects
  • Origami
  • Board games e.g. Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Draughts

Conclusion

Individual problems mentioned above do not  necessarily indicate a problem with visual perception. A child who has a good self-image and copes easily with physical and desk-top activities is therefore unlikely to have visual perceptual problems.
