Dear Diary,
I am a 15 year old girl in Iraq. I am called Dunia. I have been learning English for the past three years. It is helpful to learn. I can speak to U.S. soldiers. School was canceled last week and has not resumed since. Before at school, many books were taken away. They had Saddam’s pictures in them. I guess he is not welcome in our lives any more.
Sincerely,
Dunia

Dear Diary,
I have not been able to write for a while. I am sorry. There has been a lot of fighting around the area I live in. Car bombs have been occurring almost daily. It is scary. Many people died. My family knows people that have died. It is extremely sad. I am frightened for my life and my families’ lives. Good night. Diary.
Sincerely,
Dunia

Dear Diary,
School has still not resumed. I want to learn more, even though the teachers are not very good here at our school. I want to jump rope with my friends. People are still dying. People are screaming on their way into the hospital. I feel bad for them. The men serve our country and get hurt. How sad.
Sincerely,
Dunia

Dear Diary,
The water is so nasty here. It’s disgusting. Many children are getting sick. I have heard that an organization called UNICEF is trying to help us. I don’t want to get sick. I don’t think I would like that. It could be from broken pipes or father says it could be from not enough cleaning chemicals being used. All I hope is that my family does not get sick.
Sincerely,
Dunia

Dear Diary,
I know a friend and her family that get food from the UN. It goes way back to after the gulf war. The UN didn’t allow Iraq to trade with other countries throughout the world. It was to be enforced until Saddam got rid the dangerous weapons of mass destruction. Iraq kept getting poorer. People had malnutrition problems. So around 1995, the UN found a resolution to that problem. Iraq was allowed to sell its oil for food, medicine, and supplies. It came to be called the Oil-For-Food Program. Today my father says some 16 million Iraqis use the program. My father is very smart. He tells me many stories. Good night.
Sincerely,
Dunia

Dear Diary,
I am so happy. School is going to start back up soon. I am going to learn even more English. I want to go to Europe or America to study to become a teacher. I then want to come back to Iraq and teach our future children. I will be better than the poor teachers we have now. I will earn a lot of money and buy good supplies for my students. Oh how I have dreamed one day of becoming a teacher. It will be fun. I am so excited for my future as well as Iraq’s. Sorry Diary I have no time to write anymore. It could be a while. Sorry!
Sincerely,
Dunia
