Layne Beechly is not your average American much less your average surfer. She came from Australia at 16 as an amateur surfer, completely bypassed the amateur level, and went straight to becoming a pro. She has ranked number 6 in the world and does not have any serious rivals. She is one of the best in her area of surfing, even if surfing on a smaller wave is not her greatest strength. When surfing, Beechly is amazing on the big waves, yet on the smaller waves she has a slight problem with them, but her boyfriend who is also a surfer helps her with support and advice. There are not as many really famous pros that everyone talks about in surfing. Surfing is one of the least popular extreme sports that you do, most would be more informed in just a regular type of surfing.
