Chichen Itza
Here we are located on the Yucatan Peninsula on a limestone plateau looking at the ruins of Chichen Itza. The Mayans once lived here 3,000 years ago until the Southern region of Mayan Civilization collapsed by unknown causes guessed to be drought, disease, political upheaval, or overpopulation. The architectural style of the buildings of the older time is called Puuc, which consists of crisscross designs and other elaborate designs on the corners of buildings. The newer buildings are decorated with pictures of the people’s officials and feathered serpent gods. The Toltec people ruled Chichen Itza until AD 1200, until the city was mysteriously found abandoned. Then merchant and warrior people inhabited the city in AD 1224. These people are the ones who gave Chichen Itza its name for the wells formed by collapsed underground caves that provided water for drinking and agriculture. Chichen Itza actually means at the mouth of the well of the Itza.
