Hagia Sophia

Destination: Istanbul, Turkey

Place of interest: Hagia Sofia

We have finally arrived to the Church of Holy Wisdom, otherwise known as Hagia Sofia! It probably isn’t noticeable, but the Hagia Sofia we see now isn’t the Hagia Sofia that was built in the fourth century. The church was destroyed and rebuilt, then destroyed again. Then it was rebuilt. If that isn’t bad enough, Hagia Sofia was damaged several times. Other than those “few” setbacks, Hagia Sofia is still standing today.

Do you see those stone cannonballs outside of the entrance? Those were the actual cannonballs used in the 1453 battle for the city! This beautiful building’s interior is still being discovered. Byzantine mosaics are being uncovered slowly and delicately.

Oh, well! Look at the clock. It’s time to fly!
