Survey

  • Survey
Using SurveyMonkey.com, we conducted an online survey of approximately 100 undergrads to find out about their awareness on issues related to women in computing.
  • We conducted a survey to learn about the opinions of young people on the topic of gender equity in computing. A copy of our survey is shown here.

88 respondents from nine countries responded to our survey, two thirds of them women. Only half of them felt that women get paid as much as men for the same work in computing. Almost half of all respondents fear that women might be discriminated against in the field of computing. Only a half of those who completed our survey feel that the society they live in encourages women to take up computing as a career. Refreshingly, only a third think that a computing career conflicts with family commitments. Less than a quarter of our respondents think that computing is solitary work and less than one-fifth of them believe that women are not as good at math as men.

Unfortunately, a third of the respondents do not know that Fran Allen (or any woman) has won the Turing Prize, and a quarter of them did not think that women could develop a programming language (Adele Goldberg's SmallTalk notwithstanding).

Our survey shows that while the younger generation holds less stereotypical views of women in computing, they still need to be told about what women have already achieved in the field.
