What Can I Do?

In the same educational centre we found Albert there was another child called Robert. He was wearing a purple shirt and was rather thin and short for his age. He had smart eyes that looked at everything around him with a certain maturity. He refused to be recorded so the following dialogue was reconstructed from Alex's memory and notes.

Hello! What's your name?

Robert Dumitru David.

And how old are you?

12 and a half years old.

Tell me about your family. Have you got any brothers or sisters?

Well, I have eleven siblings – five brothers and six sisters.

And you're the eldest?

I'm the eldest boy. But I have three elder sisters.

And... When and how did you get here?

It was summer, two years ago, and the man came over to our place, discussed with my parents and convinced them to let me and some of my brothers to go to this educational centre.

What have you learned so far here?

I've learned to write and read a little.

Why didn't you go to school when you were supposed to?

My parents couldn't keep me in school because they barely managed to make ends meet.

About your parents – what do they do for a living?

My mother is staying at home taking care of us and my father chars as a mason.

Tell me, did you get accustomed to these surroundings? Have you made any friends here?

I like this place, but I don't have many friends except for my brothers.

Ok, now tell me if you have any plans for the future? I mean, what do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a policeman.

Oh, nice. Why do you want that? What do you know about cops?

I want to protect the people and not allow the children to take drugs.

Oh, that's beautiful. May you be successful in all your activities.
