Lyrical is a type of modern dance form which brings together modern dance, jazz and ballet. The point of the dance is to convey the emotion of the songs lyrics through intense emotion of the body and face. The moves are difficult, flowing, precise moves that connect to the dance. The dancers who perform the dance must be aware of facial expressions and essentially acting. The upper body movements are different from ballet but, resemble African dance.

The type of shoe the dancer is called a thong. It covers the bottom of the foot, while leaving the toes and the heel exposed. Costumes are usually flowing, allowing the dancer to move around easily. Hair is normally pulled up into a bun so the audience can see the dancer’s face.
