Gerbera jamesonii

Gerbera jamesonii

It is an evergreen plant with long upright shaft. It has different coloured inflorescence (yellow, white, red, pink, and cyclamen) that like margarita has. Its large leaves are saw-toothed.

Gerbera is a perfect cut flower and also for indoor plant. It grows up to 60 centimetres.

Origin

It comes from Africa mainly from South-Africa.

Heat and Light Claims

Gerbera likes the bright and warm conditions but should be protected by the direct sunlight because damage the petals. The southern aspect gardens and terraces are ideal for them

Water claim

It is not necessary to hose every day we can keep to dry out a bit. But the young plant like the moist soil. In colder conditions we can use lower amount of water but in hot seasons we need to hose more often. In winter time use small amount of water just avoid to dry out. Do not spray the leaves. In Summer time we need to add some nutrition solution but only to moist soil.

Soil

It likes the loose soil therefore it need to be replant time by time.

Pest

The glasshouse whitefly is biggest pest of it. It is better to use wad impregnate by pesticide than spray the leaves with it.

Infections

If we use too much water under cold conditions the grey-mould will appears. In this case remove the diseased leaves and change the conditions (increase the temperature but avoid higher than 21˘C). Or use fungicide.
