Did you know that the United States imports most of its goods from China? About 22% of United States' seafood comes from China. Five types of seafood imported from China have been found to be potentially hazardous. These foods include catfish, shrimp, eel, dace (carp-like fish), and basa (similar to a catfish). The contaminants include the residues of the antibiotic drug nitrofuran which is used to prevent fish from being infected by certain bacteria. Other toxic chemicals like malachite green, gentian violet, and an antibiotic called flouroquinolone were found in 15% of the tested fish. Nitrofuran, malachite green, and gentian violet are carcinogens. Flouroquonolone, the fourth substance, could possibly increase the resistance to Cipro, a very important antibiotic.

Consumer regulators try to help prevent bad seafood from entering the country. Shipments of imported seafood are held at the border and stay there waiting for importers to conduct independent testing showing their safety. Even though there are import alerts, over one million pounds of possibly dangerous seafood manage to slip by the inspectors.
