When treating cholera it is important to quickly replace lost fluids by taking pills to rehydrate the body. If left untreated, the bacterial infection can be life threatening because of dehydration. In severe cases, it may be necessary to treat with antibiotic therapy.

There is a vaccine for cholera that is available to anyone. The vaccine offers protection for three to six months. Scientists are trying to make a more advanced vaccine with altered live bacteria. One way to prevent cholera is to make sure sewage lines do not have leaks. Also do not litter because it could end up in food.
