Elizabethan Theatre
It is believed
that the first theater was a playhouse. People think that it was called:
The Red Lion, but
there is no hard proof. Other people think
that it was called: The Theater. In 1597 James Burbage, the owner
of the theater, died and his sons got it. Over the next two years they recycled
timber
to make a new theater. The Globe became the most famous
theater during Elizabethan times. June 29, 1613 there was a fire at the globe
theater.
A year later it was rebuilt, but in 1644 it was ruined by the puritans.
A playhouse is a small private indoor area, and it could hold up to 500
people. In 1648 playhouses were and theaters were ordered to
be pulled down by the
puritans. All of the actors were supposed to be whipped. Anyone that
was caught going to a play was fined five shillings. An Amphitheater is
like as small
football stadium. Amphitheaters were used mostly in the summer time.
They can hold if you were viewing a show, you had to pay to get in. An Inn
Yard is a
performance help at a private London Inn. Inn yards were later later
made in to play houses. They are held indoors or in the yard.
Elizabethan theater lasted during the late 16th and 17th centuries. It started
inMost of the rulers in that time were big supporters of theater, like Queen
Elizabeth. Since Queen Elizabeth was such a big supporter, it was named after
her. In Elizabethan times, the actors had to wear big heavy costumes, and
they had to yell to be heard because there were no microphones. They performed
in
the afternoon six times a week, and they spent most of their mornings rehearsing.
Shakespeare was famous during this time period.
Some Elizabethan actors are; Edward Alleyn, Christopher Beeston, John Heminge,
John Lowin, and Joseph Taylor. Also, William Shakespeare was an actor.
