Arthur Miller

The famous playwright was born on October 17, 1915 in New York City. Arthur was a compassionate and intellectual person. Miller was the son of a coat manufacturer. Miller's family suffered from huge financial ruins in the Great Depression of the 1930's. After this tragedy, Arthur worked to save money for college. Miller went to U of M (University of Michigan) from 1934-1938. He returned to New York to continue his writing after college. Arthur Miller married the famous and unanimous Marylin Monroe June 25, 1956. Miller wrote numerous plays such as, “The Man Who Had All The Luck” ( his first Broadway play), All My Sons, and his most successful play, “Death of a Salesman”. He also wrote the very famous, “Crucible”. In 1949 he won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. He also won a Tony award, and a Drama Critics Circle Award. Arthur was around from 1915-2005. People continue to read his plays.

 

The First Female Actress

On December 8th 1660, the play Othello would never be the same. During that play the audience would fall into a sea of gasps. On that very day a woman named Margret Hughes would act on stage. She was the first woman to ever act on a English stage.Before she played Desdemona, little boys would play the female roles.

It was rumored that she fell in love with Sir Charles Sedley, later she fell out of love with him and then fell in love with Prince Rupert and together they had a daughter named Ruperta. Before Margret performed on the Elizabethan stage she performed at Duke's Company at the Dorset Garden Theatre. After Rupert's death, Margaret sold a necklace he had given to her to Nell Gwyn , for 4000 guineas. She reportedly had a significant gambling habit which was a common trait in her era.

Women were never to step foot on stage. Little boys would play the female roles.

 

 


John Wayne
John Wayne was born in Iowa in 1907. Later in his life his family moved to California. John had a promising career layed out for him in the future. John was known as the Duke in his collegel because of his amazing football playing abilities. Unfortunatly John got into a body surfing accident at Newport Beach which caused muscular problems for John, so he couldn't play sports anymore. After this, John went looking for acting jobs in studios to pay his tuition. John Waynes unbelievable fame in the movie business lasted 5 years. He appeared in more then 175 films! He was nominated 3 times for the Academy Awards, and won an oscar in 1969 for his great performance in True Grit. His performance has been singled out for the best performance in movie history. He is among one of a few people who has recieved both the presidential medal of freedom and the congressional gold medal.

at age 16 When he was 16 he won 3rd prize for an essay.
1929 He went to the University of Missouri.
1931 He worked for a St.Louis shoe company
1937 Tennessee Williams got two of his plays published.
1938 Gradauted from the University of Iowa
1939 Williams produced another play.
1944 Williams made the Glass Menagerie.
34 Williams made another play that was top notch.



1948 Tennessee won a Pulitzer Prize.
