When:
In October 1929 the stock market fell to an all time low. This event was called The Great Depression. Two years after the depression started, in 1932, a president named Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected. He gave a famous speech promising to end the Great Depression. "I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people" He started a new program called The New Deal. Civilian Conservation Corps, known as the CCC ,was one of the main programs used to stop the rapidly advancing Great Depression.
Who :
The Great Depression made many nations scared of what could happen to them. Every year during the depression, the stock market would go down at least 10%. Some places thought that if they changed their government, everything would return back to the way it was before the depression. People living during the Great depression thought that the president at this time, Herbert Hoover, didn’t do anything about the Great Depression. When next president was elected, Franklin D. Roosevelt, he got the government into line and got it in control. He was the one who stopped the Great Depression by starting programs like the CCC(Civilian Conservation Corps). The Great Depression stopped right as soon as World War II started and they put money into war materials. Sales went up and they provided jobs and people got money and stores back. Everything was restored back to normal.
Significance:
The Great
Depression changed the way we live today because it makes the government
more careful about
the way the they spend their money. Also it changed the
way we live today because many people became poor and their families were effected
drastically. This event caused people to go bankrupt and many people lost their
jobs with not even a penny to spare. Every store closed because they couldn't
pay rent for the shop. People didn’t know where to turn. some starved
or asked charity for food. The Great Depression was one of the biggest event
that affected every one in the 1930’s.
