Volleyball was called "Mintonette" when it was just invented in 1895. William G. Morgan came up with this idea 4 years after the invention of basketball. This sport combined the techniques of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball.
The first Volleyball net was taken from tennis, but it was only 6 feet 6 inches (about 1.97m) high. Initially, players only needed to volley the ball back and forth across the net until a team missed it. A lot of changes was done to this sport since it first started.
Some examples of the changes are listed below:
Number of players: The number of players was limited to 6, as
compared to the unlimited number of players at first.
Number of times a team touches the ball before it goes over to
the opponents: It was limited to 3. Previously, there was no
limit on this.
Type of ball: An official volleyball was made in 1900. Rubber
bladder from inside a basketball was used before the production
of volleyball.
Height of the net: It was increased to 2.43m for men's
competition and 2.24m for women's competition
Points system: It was reduced to 15, instead of the original 21.
