After the demise of Wigan Borough, Wigan Athletic Football Club was formed in 1932. Holding the biggest win in a cup for a non Football League team to defeat a team in the league. This record came with a 6-1 victory over Carlisle Unite in the fifth round of the FA Cup. It was even until 1978, until Wigan Athletic FC was accepted into the Football League.
Winning the thrid division of the Football League under John Deeham, Wigan was promoted to the First Division under Paul Jewell in only his second season as manager of the club.
