Founded in 2004 as an expansion club, Real Salt Lake's name was chosen by Dave Checketts and SCP Worldwide partners. Hoping to relate the name to that of the Spanish soccer powerhouse Real Madrid, RSL's hopeful success has not come. In their three years in the MLS, the Red and Blue Army haven't qualified for the playoffs.

Yet, many notable players have touched the ball on the Real Salt Lake side. Teenage sensation Freddy Adu, played on RSL for one season before venturing off to Benfica FC. Current manager and prolific goalscorer Jason Kreis ended his career at RSL. With Jason Kreis now at the helm of the Red and Blue Army, supporters hope for future years of success to come.
