Alien: A resident born in or belonging to another country who has not acquired citizenship by naturalization
Amnesty: A general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
Citizen: A native or naturalized member of a state or nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection.
DREAM Act: (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act): Proposed legislation that would allow illegal immigrant students citizenship if they go to college or serve in the military. Falied to gain passage in the US Senate on October 24, 2007.
Green Card: An official card, originally green, issued by the U.S. government to foreign nationals permitting them to work in the U.S.
Guest Worker: A foreign worker allowed to work in a new country. It is a notion that you come to a country to work, rather than the intention to live, reside, or to become a citizen.
Human Rights: The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled.
Hunger: A compelling need or desire for food.
Illegal: Forbidden by law or statute.
Immigrant: A person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.
Immigrant Visa: A visa given to a person who desires to permanently reside in the U.S.
Legal: Permitted by law.
Non-Immigrant Visa: A visa given to a person that is permanently living outside the U.S., but who wants to be in the U.S. on a short-time basis, for example, tourism, medical treatment, business, short-time work, or study.
Secure the borders: Ensuring that no one gets into the country without having being inspected and cleared by that country’s authorities.
Social Security Number: A number, assigned to you by the US Government, which identifies who you are. It is used for identification reasons, it is used for reporting, for paying benefits, and many other " identification" purposes.
Terrorism: The use of terror, violence or intimidation.
Visa: An endorsement made by an authorized representative of one country upon a passport issued by another, permitting the passport holder entry into or transit through the country making the endorsement.
War: A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation; warfare, as by land, sea, or air. |
