Since man's earliest encounter with animals, man has had a desire to keep them nearby. The bigger and stronger the animal, the smarter you had to be to capture them. To show their power, royalty would collect animals and keep them in menageries. To improve their menageries they would often capture and trade for exotic animals. They believed it would prove their power and wealth. Some animals were thought to be sacred and have magical powers. Rulers would often exchange their pets to make friends with other royalty.

When Kings and Queens were dethroned their menageries became public property. That's when zoos were born.
