Pete: You know Tina, that in a perfect world there wouldn't be a need for zoos or any conservation organization. You know that we are in a period where plants and animals are becoming extinct. Thank goodness that zoos have stepped up and saved some species from extinction. Tina: Even in an imperfect world there shouldn't be any need for zoos. There is an organization called Born Free. They're against keeping animals in cages. For animals life in the wild is dangerous, but they are wild for that reason. They belong in the wild. Pete: I have never understood why Born Free doesn't think zoos have gotten better. The knowledge and skills zoo have developed about working with and understanding animals is a great help.. Tina: Zoos aren't making any progress because animals are still suffering and dying in zoos. Locking animals in cages does not give anyone more education about them. Being locked up keeps animals from behaving naturally. Zoo goers only learn how animals behave in captivity and not the wild. Pete: All zoos are different, some are good and some are bad. It's not fair to put all zoos in the same category and call them all bad. Tina: "Bad" zoos are not being closed like they should be. Citizens are finally realizing that zoos are not able to solve the problems facing wild plants and animals on earth. Zoos should close and spend their money on conservation projects around the world. . Pete: Zoos around the world belong to the, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and they are trying to help all zoos reach higher standards for the good of the animals. This association has done a lot of good things for animals. Tina: Born Free wants zoos to realize that wild animals shouldn't be in crammed spaces. Animals show stressed behaviors in captivity. They belong in the wild. Pete: You and Born Free are opposed to wild animals being held in captivity, no matter how good the quality is. Good and responsible zoos do exist and they are becoming more resourceful and effective in their conservation work. Tina: Born Free is opposed to the unjustified containment of wild animals. Born Free helps to improve the life of animals and to keep them where they belong... in the wild. |
