Naturalistic Upgrading is where zoos try to make their animal's environment more like
their natural habitat. This allows captive animals to feel and behave like
they would in the wild. It takes a lot of time and effort by the zoo keepers to make this happen.
Two examples of zoos who have successfully created natural living spaces are Zoo Atlanta and the Roger Williams Park in Providence RI. Both have learned that the best way to improve an animal's space is to let nature do much of the work. An outdoor exhibit should offer animals choices like, breezy/sheltered, cool/warm, sunny/shady, damp/dry, and bright/dark. Natural zoo exhibits tend to provide hiding places for animals. Unfortunately, zookeepers have to make a difficult choice between providing natural hiding spots for the animals, versus creating a clear view for the visitors.
