Hal Markowitz

In the 1970s, Hal Markowitz ( A Professor at the San Francisco State University ) designed some crazy ways of enriching the lives of animals in cages. Take a look:

Flying Meatballs

This device was made with a teflon rod on a pulley system that ran at various heights over the heads of African wildcats. Jumping up and hitting the rod would result in the delivery of raw meat to the wildcats.

Elephant Wash.

This self-operated shower for elephants was assembled with assistance from a local car wash manufacturer. When the chain was pulled, it activated a shower for 20 seconds.

May I Take Your Order?

A fish would be shot into the polar bear pond every time one of them made a sound into a microphone. After growling into the microphone the bears would dash into the pool to recieve their fish.

Monkey Business

When a light flashed on in the exhibit, a monkey could press a lever on one side of the exhibit and then swing over to the other to retrieve his treat.
