DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION
People with disabilities are scattered all over the world and in every country there are discriminated persons because of their impossibility of being “normal”. But what does NORMAL mean? People think that being a normal human being
means having a common appearance, having the possibility of doing whatever it is necessary and perhaps the most important thing consists in maintaining him/herself. However, it can be proved that this is totally untrue. For instance, thieves, murderers, psychopaths are considered NORMAL people but are they? A murderer may be included in that category I spoke about but is he not a danger for our society? Why innocent people are judged because of their appearance and the real rough costumers sometimes do not get the punishment they deserve? So, we have no right to marginalise these persons who, in most of cases, are not guilty of their disability.
How do they live in this society?
These “special” persons face discrimination everywhere they go: people with difficulty in movement, people with Down Syndrome, with acromegaly, scars, difficulty in hearing, epilepsy, difficulty in seeing, mental illnesses, speech impediment and so on are prone to cruel treatment in our society. They also face discrimination in finding a job: employers are always looking for their interest and when they meet this kind of people, they do not stay too much to analyse the situation and tell them that they are not the person they are looking for. On the other hand, disabled persons need lot of care and special conditions of living but do they always have whatever they need? I say they do not. 90% of the cases in which people need the help of the government or that of the Ministry of Public Health, they face the bad operation of the system.
Perhaps sometimes they need medicines or special equipment but they do not have the requested funds so they are obliged to live in inappropriate conditions. Some of them present withdrawal symptoms and isolate themselves from the outside world while others try to do their best and to find a refuge in painting, music or other domain. There are many examples of people that have succeeded in creating a career or that have better skills than the normal ones. For instance, a little girl who has difficulty in movement has instead a higher IQ than other children of the same age, or a young man with the same problem goes to college in spite of his difficulty and has impressive results.
