Adaptations
Red mangroves survive by having stilt roots and taking in air through pores in their bark. Black mangroves live on higher ground and have pneumatophores.
Another adaptation by the Red Mangroves is having roots that are impermeable to salt.
Most mangroves also adapt to their environment by shedding old leaves. This happens after taking in excess salt. White or Grey Mangroves can secrete salts directly via the two salt glands at each leaf base where you may see white salt crystals. |
