Survey in Singapore

The Forest Buddies team conducted two surveys with regards to recycling and global warming in Singapore. Here are our results:

Survey on Global Warming
88 people responded to our local survey on global warming. The results are as follows:

Question 1:
Do you know what global warming is?

Graph 1 : The majority of responders believe that they know what global warming is. Global warming is due to greenhouse effects as a result of deforestation and burning of fossil fuel.

Question 2:
Are you concerned by the effects of global warming?

Graph 2 : The majority are concerned about global warming although 14.9% of the responders were not concerned. Read the topic on the effects of global warming to find out more.

Question 3:
What are some of the harmful effects of global warming?

Graph 3 : Flooding is the only right choice. The majority have given the wrong answers. Skin cancer and eye cataract result from depletion of the ozone layer which allows harmful ultra-violet rays to pass through.

Question 4:
How do you get to school/work?

Garph 4 : Most people travel by car. Slightly more than a third take public transport. Taking private transport will aggravate global warming due to burning of fossil fuel. In order to extract fossil fuel, large area of forests may need to be cut down.

Question 5:
Which of the following energy-saving devices are installed in your house? Solar panels or energy-saving light bulbs?

Graph 5 : The majority of people use energy-saving light bulbs. Only 10 % use the solar panel. This is an area that needs development. When we save energy, we shall save more fuel. When lesss fuel is needed, less forests will be cut down to build oil rigs.

Question 6:
Do you leave any of these devices switched on when not in use?

Graph 6 : More than half of the responders do not switch off the air-conditioner when not in use. This could be due to centralised air-conditioning being used. Unfortunately the survey did not address this issue.

Question 7:
Who do you think plays the biggest role in reducing global warming?

Graph 7 : MNCs are Multi National Corporations. More than a third of people believe that it should be an individual's effort. However, the truth is everyone or all the above should be responsible for it.

Survey on Recycling

92 people responded to our survey on recycling. The results are as follows:

Question 1:
Do you practise recycling?

Pie chart 1 : A majority of our responders practise some form of recycling. Recycling reduces wastage and by reusing products made from forest materials can help to save the forests and reduce deforestation.

Question 2:
Where do you practise recycling?

Pie chart 2 : Most people practise recycling at home. More recycling should be encouraged in the other places.

Question 3:
How many times a week do you practise recycling?

Pie chart 3 : More than a third of people practise recycling everyday. We should all be proactive in recycling to save our earth.

Question 4:
What items do you recycle?

Pie chart 4 : Paper is an item that is frequently recycled. This is good as it can help to reduce deforestation.

Question 5:
Do you bring your own recycle bags or plastic bags to buy things?

Pie chart 5 : Most people are still not used to bringing their own recycling bag when they shop or go marketing. More can be done to encourage this practice. This practice prevents the accumulation of plastic bags which causes pollution and the high usage of paper bags which needs trees to be cut down.

Question 6:
Are you aware of the benefits of recycling?

Pie chart 6 : Surprisingly, there are still people who are not aware of the benefits of recycling, so more can be done to create the awareness with regards to the need to recycle.. From this chart, you can see that although 89% are aware of its benefit, the first pie chart shows that only 71% practise recycling.
