China
The awareness of adverse effects of deforestation prompted the People's Republic of China to require citizens to plant trees annually.
Western countries
There is an increasing consumer demand for wood products. However, the people here are also more aware of the adverse effects of deforestation. Hence, they are more likely to support products from companies that harvest their products in a sustainable manner.
In Brazil, it is mandatory to replant tree saplings following logging. This ensures a continual timber supply and helps prevent soil erosion.
South-east Asia
On the 29th March 2007, Australia pledged A$200 million to fight deforestation in South-east Asia. Indonesia received the most funds to fight deforestation. Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard commented that destruction of forests accounts for a fifth of the world's greenhouse gas levels. |
