| Combating haze |
| Resources The haze problem is not an easy one to solve as no strict law exists to prevent slash and burn. Limited resources, corruption and poor surveillance remain the obstacles to prevent this problem. Countries affected by the haze should prosecute foreign companies that cause the haze. Such companies should employ environmentally-friendly methods to clear land or face the music if they flout the law. Peat lands and other forests that store carbon should have a value in terms of economy. This will also help to deter companies from buying forests which are rich carbon stores and prevent prolonged haze. Deforestation poses a dilemma for all of us. We may benefit from the material products a forest can provide. However, we may end up suffering from the consequences of our actions. The harmful effects of deforestation can hurt everyone. Therefore, we have to be responsible towards the environment. |
