Introduction
Rainforests are home to many of the world’s indigenous people. They depend on the forest to survive.
In East Malaysia, the indigenous people live in longhouses. Up to 15 families can live in one longhouse.
In each longhouse, there is a usually a village head. They usually practice farming near their longhouse and move only when the soil becomes unfavourable for their crops.
Lifestyle
Indigenous people can be found almost everywhere. They have their own unique ways of ensuring their survival which we can learn from. They may settle in a particular place or they may be nomads. |
Knowledge
Indigenous societies have invaluable knowledge with respect to the resources of the rainforests. For instance, we can learn to use plants and plant parts in the forests for food and for medicine.
Effects of deforestation
| |
| Deforestation causes techniques used by the indigenous people in horticulture, hunting or gathering to be lost. Worst of all, their knowledge of the medicinal plants found in the forests will be lost too. |
