Loss of Indigenous tribes

The effect of deforestation on indigenous people

Deforestation can lead to many effects on the indigenous people. Firstly, deforestation causes them to move away from their ancestral homes. Secondly, deforestation is also associated with the loss of animals and plants that the indigenous people depend on to survive. Their traditional life-styles, customs and religious beliefs can be lost. Another great loss is their knowledge of medicine that had been passed down by their ancestors.

The effect of deforestation on the indigenous people can also be seen in the Amazonian Rainforest in Brazil. There are now less than 200,000 indigenous Indians left here. If this carries on, their population will dwindle further to an alarming level.

Go to the section on the case study on Bakun Dam to see how the indigenous people are affected by the development to appreciate how deforestation and development can affect them.
