Drier climate
When the climate becomes drier, crops can be threatened. A decrease in rainfall can kill the crops. Without the shade from trees, the rate of evaporation will increase. This can draw salt up to the surface. Plants do not thrive well when this happens. Less moisture will be retained if there are fewer plants, which in turn leads to the vicious cycle of lower rainfall.
Eventually, desertification of the land occurs. Sandstorms also occur frequently because of the lack of forests to hold the sand together. Sandstorms have been reported to cause an economic loss of more than 50 billion yuan and affect more than 400 million people in China annually.
