Ecosystem and Biodiversity
A planted forest differ from an original forest in species composition, ecosystem functions and ability to support a wide range of biodiversity. Original forest has an innate ability to overcome stress such as drought and disease better. Reforested areas may not be able to overcome such problems.
Natural tropical forests are the habitats of most of the world's remaining biodiversity. Most of the remaining forests are found in less-developed countries. These countries have a high population growth and this means a greater demand on land, causing forests to be cleared for land for a growing population.
Therefore, we need to find the right balance between forest conservation and development to prevent the loss of biodiversity.
