Mining

Introduction

Minerals such as coal, iron, bauxite and tin are found beneath the forest. Large amounts of forests have to be cleared for mining operations.

Deforestation to support mining

Large hydroelectric power plants are needed to support the mining of bauxite. Dammed rivers cause upstream forests to be flooded and trees to be submerged and killed.

Numerous oil rigs have been erected in the Amazon Rainforest to extract petroleum. Forests have to be cleared for transportation of the workers and for the raw materials.
