Forest fires

Prevention

The controlled burning of some trees before the occurrence of drought can prevent wildfires. Fire lookouts can also serve to detect forest fires as early as possible.

Fire suppression needs manpower with trucks and water-spraying apparatus. Helicopters can transport fire-fighters to inaccessible areas. If the fire is on a steep hill or in a forest, fire-fighters can even fast-rope down from helicopters. They can also parachute in to fight the fire. Flame retardant chemicals may also be used.

A super absorbent polymer, called “gel” is being used to fight such fires as the gel is absorbent and can store a lot of water.
