| Samuel says... |
|
| Introduction |
| |
Hello, I am Samuel. I am currently 15 years old and I am studying at the Anglo Chinese School (Independent) in Singapore. I joined Thinkquest because my friend, Rui Jin, persuaded me to participate in it. When I realised this competition was about research, writing and designing an educational website, I thought it was a good opportunity to broaden my horizon and acquire new knowledge.
Meaningful topic
After much discussion, we finally chose the topic on “Deforestation”. Singapore was experiencing a terrible haze condition every year due to deforestation by our neighbouring countries. Hence, this topic is close to us. We hope to create public awareness through this website as well.
Learning journey
Three words that come to my mind to describe this competition are “meaningful”, “team-bonding” and “enriching”. I learnt numerous things during the journey of this competition. I discovered how to create websites and use programmes such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash and Adobe Photoshop.
I also learnt how to make jigsaw puzzles and conduct a survey on-line.
Collaboration
While researching for information for the project, I learnt new interesting facts related to deforestation. During the midst of this project, we met up a number of times, despite our tight schedule. If we did not have time to gather, we would call or e-mail each other to inform each other of our progress and allocation of the next task.
Field work
Our team even organised a hike at Bukit Timah Hill. It was actually my first time climbing Bukit Timah Hill. Even though it was tiring, it was both enjoyable and meaningful as we admired the natural greenery while taking some photos for the project.
Interaction
Throughout the whole project, the most valuable skill I learnt is to create interactive crossword puzzles. After a short consultation with our coach, Mr Galvin Sng, he thought me how to create interactive crossword puzzles using Javascript.
Thanks!
Last but not least, I like to thank our coach, Mr Galvin Sng, and Rui Jin’s mother, for their invaluable time in guiding us in completing this project. Without them, all these would not have been possible. |
