VILLAGES
Since we can recall, strong villages with traditions and specific customs were built in Bukovina, the most important of them being:
Ciocăneşti
The name comes from the word “ciocănari”, which refers to the people that made weapons for defending their lands. It is situated in the South-West of Suceava, in “Obcinele Bucovinei” and has an altitude between 850 and 940 m. It has an oblong shape, situated on both beds of the Bistriţa Aurie River. Its neighbors are Cârlibaba, to its North, Fundu Moldovei to its North-East, Pojorâta to its East, and Cosna to its West. Ciocăneşti is a tourist village, well renowned for the ornamental architecture of the houses here.
Breaza
In the upstream of Fundu Moldovei, at a distance of 27 km from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, one can find the Breaza Commune, the only village with Austrian administration in Bukovina. It has a population of 2.300 people, most of them being Romanians and Ukranians. The commune consists of: Breaza, Breaza de Sus, Pârâul Negrii, Pârâul Brezei and Măgura. From here, we can access Moldoviţa by crossing the pass of Paşcan (1250 m), and continuing to the valley of Demacusa, 28 km large.
Baia
At a distance of 8 km from Fălticeni, one can find Baia, one oldest cities here, the first capital of Moldova, but nowadays, a normal village.
This very old settlement is believed to exist since paleolithic. A fortressonce existed in Plopii Băii, one with forts, silex and ceramic tools. The appereance of house-trade here, and its developement was stimulated by the richness of the soil, making this commune a very important place for the merchants and craftsmen of Transylvania.
Cârlibaba
At the intersection of the Ţibău Massive and the Lucina and Suhard Mountains, on the upstream of the river Bistriţa Aurie, the Cârlibaba Commune was formed. It is surrounded by some of the highest mountains around (the Măgura Mountain-1623 m, Ţapul Mare-1661 m, Stânişoara mountain-1698 m). It has a population of 2.500 people and is divided into the village of Ţibău, Piatra Ţibăului, the village of Iedu and that of Valea Stânii.
Marginea
Marginea is a village situated at the intersection point of the Suceava Plateau, Obcina Mare and the road that links Rădăuţi with Câmpulung Moldovenesc. The name results from the fact that the village is situated at the forest’s limit.
The presence of distinct natural surroundings, fast rivers and lawns, makes athis village a great tourist attraction.
Fundu Moldovei
Going upstream on the Moldova River, at a distance of 14 km form Câmpulung we will find in the Fundu Moldovei Commune. The first colonisations occured in the 13th century, with the migration of the shepherds. It contains mountains with medium heights that do not exceed 1200 m. The population is somewhere around 2300 people, the following villages being situated here: Fundu Moldovei, Colacu, Botuş, and Braniştea. It has a rich folklorical activity because of the three ensembles of traditional dancing: Arcanul, Arcaşii Bucovinei and Timinianca. In March, a religious music festival takes place here, called “Buna Vestire”.
Izvoarele Sucevei
Izvoarele Sucevei is situated near the springs of the Suceava River, at a distance of 52 km. from Câmpulung. It was configurated after the year1762, by the settling of the „huţuli” here, the old heart being the village of Bobeica. Its surroundings consist of mountains with hights that reach 1551 m (the Zubaru Peak). The village of Brodina de Sus connectes, by the means of a forest road, with Brodina (21 km) and Izvoare (13 km), and by those of a military road with Moldova (13 km).
Moldoviţa
It is situated on the superior course of the Moldoviţa River, at a 650 m. altitude in Obcina Feredeului, at a distance of 40 km from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, having a population of 5.000 people. It has high altitudes on the slopes of Feredeu: Paşcanu-1479 m, Tiomnaticul Mic-1351 m, Turculova-1257 m, Chicera Mică-1294 m and over 1200 m in Obcina Mare.
Putna
Putna is situated on Obcina Mare’s North, on the valley of the Putna River, at a distance of 32 km from Rădăuţi, being documentary attested in 1468. The history of the commune connects with the Putna Monastery. It has heights between 700 and 1200 m and a population of 3700 people in the Putna and Gura Putnei villages.
Sadova
Sadova, Pojotâta’s neighbour, is situated at a 6 km distance of Câmpulung and was founded in the second half of the 17th century, in a mountain space that barely exceeds 1300m. The population has a value of 2.000, and mostly consists of Romanians living in the of Sadova and Fundu Sadovei villages.
Suceviţa
It is situated in the East part of Obcina Mare, at a 18 km. distance of Rădăuţi, surrounded by the peaks of Furcoiul and Palma. With a surface of 89 square km, it is covered entirely with old forests. The modern tourist structures are more attractive, making the commune more interesting.
Vatra Moldoviţei
At a distance of 5 km from Moldoviţa, one can reach the Vatra Moldoviţei Commune, situated at a distance of 26 km from Câmpulung an dat a 24 one from Rădăuţi. Documentally attested in 1402, its historical connected to the history of the monastery, an UNESCO monument. It has a population of 2.500 people, Romanians, from Vatra Moldoviţei, and Ukraniens, from the Ciumarna and Paltin villages
