New Mexico State Sanitarium

One of the old sanitariums on the list of haunted places is the New Mexico State Sanitarium. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in Escondida, New Mexico. It opened in 1932 with enough beds and space for 50 people, but was eventually expanded to have 1,200 beds. Like other sanitariums it had dormitories, kitchens and recreation areas.
Unfortunately, in 1952 the sanitarium had to be closed after reports that released patients had to be treated for lack of nutrition. Many patients died there from neglect. That is one of the reasons there are many rumors about its being haunted.
After being closed the New Mexico TB Sanitarium lands became a battery manufacturing plant and many of the buildings remain.

In the old sanitarium buildings, people have reported seeing glowing balls of light around the building after dark and have also heard unusual noises from the old dorm buildings. Some paranormal groups have investigated these areas.
