Bovine Tuberculosis
Yes, animals can have TB, too. There are three different strains of TB,
one being human, one avian, and another bovine. The human strain is rarely
ever transmitted to something other than a human, the avian strain stays
in birds, though pigs and some other animals have been suspected of having
it.
Bovine TB is the most infectious and cam infect nearly all mammals,
but is mostly found in cattle. Before pasteurization of milk, bovine
TB was responsible for spreading TB to many people. Now milk is pasteurized
to prevent tuberculosis from infecting milk and cows are tested and treated
for bovine tuberculosis. Recently, bovine tuberculosis has struck in
white tailed deer populations, so hunters need to be aware of the possibility
of the dangers.
