Singapore

Singapore’s government system revolves around a political ideology- meritocracy. Meritocracy is a form of ideology which encourages the leaders of tomorrow to spearhead the country’s government through rewards or incentives. Singapore exercises this to make sure that she has the individual talents to help the country. Examples of Singapore’s rewarding system include the baby bonus scheme, with the most notable being the scholarship awards. Singapore’s ministry of education gives out scholarships every year, to students whom they think have the potential to be government leaders. This encourages students to work and better themselves. Singapore’s government system includes a president and his cabinet. In the cabinet, different ministers will administer different aspects of a country. These cabinet members are all individual leaders whom Singapore has chosen.

Singapore

Why this?

In Singapore, it is a dog-eat-dog society. Competition is stiff. Who excels, who benefits. Thus, everyone is striving to stand out from the rest in many different aspects. Singapore is a country, thus she can be easily run by individual cabinet members. If there is no scholarship system, the talents go unspotted and these individual talents are unnoticed. We must bear in mind that Singapore has always pushed for excellence among individuals in Singapore.

Pros

Giving out rewards not only nurture individual talents, but also encourage others to aim for this, thus improving themselves everyday and even though they may not be awarded with say, scholarships, they have actually bettered themselves.

Cons

Rewards are for those who deserve it. However, according to statistics shown, in the past 20 years, Singapore has produced much more Chinese scholars than non-Chinese scholars. This causes the citizens to feel that this rewarding system is biased against the non-Chinese. Racial discrimination may then occur in our multiracial society.

Economic contribution:

The government sets aside a sum of money to give to the scholars. This is seen as a form of investment where the scholar will have to “sign” an invisible pact which binds them to Singapore in the future. These scholars in turn will be money making tools in the future, thus contributing to the economy.

Conclusion:

Meritocracy nurtures individual talents for Singapore, but at the same time can cause upheaval among the citizens. If meritocracy was absent, would Singapore have progressed this far today? Without leaders who are able to stand up and lead, Singapore definitely would not have come this far. We may probably be led by multi parties whose decision making skills are not as quick and collaborative as those by individuals who are leaders within them.
