Origins
The term communist state is a name to describe a state which controlled by one ruling party and this party is the communist party. The term was invented during the Cold War to describe countries which had adopted the system of communism in Eastern Europe like the Soviet Union and Eastern Asian like the People’s Republic of China. However communist states do not refer to themselves as “communist state”. In Marxist ideologies, world communism is the final state of society where everyone is equal and no one will be poor. The current state of capitalism and socialism that countries are in right now need a Communist Party to pull them towards communism. There used to be 26 communist states in the world, and one-third of the world’s population lived in communist states. The current lists of communist states are People’s Republic of China, Republic of Cuba, Democratic Republic of Korea, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Features
But a communist state does not necessarily mean that there is only one party in the country, in some countries there are also other political parties, however, the communist party is always the dominant one in the state. In countries that held elections, there were instances where the communist party in the country had won. It does not mean that these countries have become communist state, unless the ruling party banned all the other ruling parties and declare themselves as the only party in the country. What differentiates a communist state from a one party system country is that a communist state declares that they follow the Marist-Leninism Ideologies.
Communist states have a planned economy so as to improve the economy of the country. But communist states such as China, and Vietnam, to a lesser extent, have been practicing economical reforms in 1980s as command economy was not effective in the country. A General Secretary of Communist Party does not have a state office like other leaders in the world. But the members of the party have state offices; they are answerable to the General Secretary. They are usually rewarded with these state offices for the long years working for the party.
In Marxist and Lenin ideologies, all leaders must be elected by the people and all proposals can be debated. But once a decision is reached, all have the duty to obey it. This is known as democratic centralism, and this is to prevent any splits in the government. When this is applied to the society as a whole, it creates a one party system in the country.
Pros and Cons
Communist parties claim that communism has helped the people to have better life and healthcare than capitalist states. They believe that socialism has helped to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, and everyone has equal opportunities.
Economy planning in various countries is a five years plan to set path for the production in the different industries. It has helped the economy, like the development of heavy industry in Soviet Union in the 1930s, which later led to the rapid advances in space program. However in countries like Vietnam, Laos and China, they are still experiencing poverty despite the plan being implemented. Economic planning has also caused some negative impacts, like the “Great Leap” in China, where the country focused too much on metal production and heavy industry, which caused a lag in agriculture. This eventually led many people starving to death. China only began to achieve high rate of growth after economic reform.
There have rarely been restrictions on the powers of communist state as Marxist ideologies believe that restrictions will only obstruct the goal of reaching communism. Hence there have always been discussions between political scientists that this has caused the government to be corrupted. Political scientists have also pointed out that there are similarities between communist state and totalitarian government. There are also secret police in communist state so as to monitor any threats to the government.
Impact on Society
Communist states usually have a slower rate of growth than other capitalist countries, as communist party aims for all people to have the same amount of wealth; the rate of development is much slower. It is compulsory for all children in a communist state to go to school, and finish at least high school; this ensures a high level of education in the country. But when compared to other democratic countries, the percentage of children who have completed school is much lower.
Like totalitarian government, communist state uses propaganda to a large extent, being the only political party in the country, government uses propaganda to promote the various policies that they have carried out, in order to get the support of the general public. Hence this will also make people more patriotic.
