Do
you know what reducing means? It is the method of cutting down on the
amount of waste produced. We reduce when something is unnecessary, can
be avoided and is not a need at all. (E.g. We reduce by using
reusable bag instead of plastic bags. This is because if we use plastic
bags, which are considered disposable, we will need lots and lots of
it. However if reusable bags are used, we need only 1 bag. So, we
reduce on the waste produced by the plastic bags.)
The method of reducing helps to cut down on waste produced as fewer
items being purchased means less waste being generated. Many of us are
also reducing every day without even knowing it. Even writing on both
sides of a piece of paper is reducing. Buying refillable things can
also be considered reducing. So, reducing (and practicing the 3
‘R’s) is not hard at all. We just need to put in
some effort into it
Here, we will also share with you some facts. In 2000, 28% of the
materials that are reduced are actually containers and packaging. 17%
of them are non-durable goods (newspaper, cloths); durable goods
represent about 10% of them, the others stands about 45%. An, from
1977, the weight of plastic bottles was reduced from 68 g each to 51 g
only! Thus, millions of pounds of plastic are actually reduced each
year! (Facts from
“http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/sourcred.htm”)
Reducing
is the most effective way of all the 3 ‘R’s (The
best method is reducing, followed by reusing and finally recycling.),
which is to stop and prevent waste from being created in the first
place.
Practicing
reducing save money and the Earth. So practise the 3
‘R’s. You just have to put in some effort to help
save the Earth.
